As part of my freshman humanities course, Hum/VC 50 Introduction to Film, I embarked on an unforgettable field trip to Hollywood. With eager anticipation, our class set off to explore the iconic Hollywood Boulevard and delve into the rich history of the film industry.
As we strolled along Hollywood Boulevard, we were captivated by the sense of glamour and nostalgia that permeated the air. The street was adorned with stars on the Walk of Fame, each representing the illustrious careers of countless Hollywood legends. Passing by the locations of old movie theaters, Professor Catherine Jurca painted images in our minds of the bustling crowds and anticipation that once filled these grand venues.

Before entering the El Capitan Theater, our journey took an exciting detour across the street to the iconic TCL Chinese Theater. There, we marveled at the handprints and footprints of legendary Hollywood celebrities, a living history of the entertainment industry. As we gazed upon the imprints of stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Downey Jr, we couldn’t help but feel a profound connection to the cinematic legacy that surrounded us. This encounter with the tangible imprints of Hollywood’s luminaries added an extra layer of awe to our cinematic adventure.

Our journey culminated at the majestic El Capitan Theater, known for its unique and immersive cinema experience. Instead of the customary movie trailers, a talented organ player played classical melodies, filling the theater with an enchanting ambiance.

As the curtains drew, anticipation reached its peak. The organist’s fingers danced across the keys, and the familiar strains of the iconic Star Wars theme song reverberated throughout the theater. We settled into our seats, ready to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in true cinematic style.
The film unfolded before our eyes, transporting us to a galaxy far, far away. Sharing this experience with our classmates created a unique bond, as we laughed, gasped, and marveled together.

The ten of us in the class excitedly discussed the film, exchanging thoughts, theories, and favorite moments (mine was probably the introduction of the cute and fluffy Ewoks!). The ride back was filled with lively debates and shared excitement, as we contemplated the impact of cinema on our lives and the broader cultural landscape.
This field trip not only deepened our understanding of the art of film but also reinforced the power of storytelling and the collective experience of watching movies. It was a true testament to the transformative potential of cinema and the shared joy it can bring.
