Hello! My name is Jena, and I’m a junior studying computer science and political science. I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and am a member of Lloyd, Fleming, and Page House. On campus, I’m involved with the Caltech Y, student government, and dance.
I’m really passionate about the intersection of science and policy and want to work in the climate or reproductive rights space after Caltech. I recently participated in a tech policy fellowship advising the San Jose City government on mitigating AI-powered misinformation. I love diving into politics and anything related to human-centered computing.
Last summer, I SURFed in the Alvarez Lab using Machine Learning for climate! I applied Natural Language Processing to identify semantic patterns in rhetoric from oil companies and clean energy companies. My comparative analysis aimed to spotlight corporate greenwashing and climate misinformation.
Outside of academics, I spend a remarkable amount of time and money exploring the LA vegan food scene. It’s rare for me to say no to a boba or coffee run. You can often catch me running across campus at 9:50 P.M. to Twinkle Tea before it closes at 10. I also love anything outdoors – hiking, camping, kayaking, and more. I’ve been to over 20 national parks and love trying new trails. One of my favorite parts about LA is that you don’t have to choose between nature and the city. It’s super easy to get outside for a hike and then try a new restaurant downtown afterward.
