Hello! I’m Selene, a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering (Biomolecular track). I’m from San Diego, CA, and I am a member of Avery House. In addition to being a tour guide and blogging for the Admissions Office, I work as a peer tutor at the Hixon Writing Center, which helps students at Caltech with their writing inside and outside of the humanities.
Additionally, I serve on Caltech’s ARC (Academics & Research Committee) and BOC (Board of Control). The ARC is our student body responsible for addressing course concerns and organizing student-faculty events, and the BOC is our student body responsible for addressing violations of the Honor Code. I am also Vice President of Caltech’s AIChE club (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) and Secretary of the Model United Nations club. In my free time, I enjoy reading fantasy and sci-fi novels and watching C-dramas. In fact, I’m also the President of the Caltech C-Drama Club!
In my first year at Caltech, I was a member of the inaugural class of Integrated Core (IC), a pilot curriculum that aims to combine most areas of Core into one cohesive and interdisciplinary set of courses. During the year and during the summer, as a part of the SURF program, I did research on the chaperone activity of an algal chaperone protein, cpSRP43, in the Shan Lab, where I performed a lot of interesting biochemical experiments. I really enjoyed IC, my research, and the rest of the first-year experience, so I’m very excited to share it with you.
