DiscoTech: Trip to Griffith

Every year when newly admitted students from around the world visit Caltech for our three-day orientation, we make sure to show them a few LA staples. One of my all-time favorites, which never ceases to amaze me, is the Griffith Observatory. Whether you’re a fan of “La La Land” or just love beautiful views, this is the place for you.

Upon reaching the top of the hill, you’re greeted by a sprawling grassy area overlooking all of Los Angeles, with the stunning observatory standing proudly in front. Every visit feels like a new adventure, and every direction offering something breathtaking to see.

During our recent DiscoTech event, we took the newly admitted students to the observatory just before sunset—the best time to go, in my opinion. We arrived around 6 P.M., and soon, a sea of orange Caltech shirts filled the area.

Students had the chance to explore the inside galleries and delve into the wonders of space. Some exhibits are particularly thrilling. One showcases real satellites from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which collaborates closely with Caltech. The views, especially at sunset, provide plenty of entertainment for those less inclined towards galleries.

As the evening drew to a close, we gathered everyone into the planetarium to enjoy a show with friends. It was the perfect end to a perfect trip. The Griffith Observatory is an absolute must-visit, just a 30-minute drive from campus.

Words can hardly capture the magic of this place, so enjoy this collection of photos I’ve taken over the past two years, including snapshots from our recent DiscoTech trip to Griffith Observatory.
