At the end of the first week of classes, our undergraduate student government (ASCIT) organized a fantastic event for students to try a bunch of food and hear from legendary Caltech physicist and Nobel laureate Kip Thorne, who joined us that evening for a book signing and discussion about his role in the movie Oppenheimer!
For those unfamiliar with him, Kip Thorne is one of the most celebrated physicists of our time, renowned for his groundbreaking work in theoretical physics, particularly in the realms of black holes, gravitational waves, and general relativity. A long-time professor at Caltech, he was one of the key figures behind the discovery of gravitational waves, a finding that confirmed a major prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity and opened up a whole new way of observing the universe. This achievement earned him (and Rainer Weiss and Barry Barish) the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Beyond his scientific accolades, Thorne has also made his mark in popular media, playing a pivotal role in making science accessible and exciting to a broader audience. One of his most well-known contributions was as the scientific consultant for the 2014 film Interstellar. He ensured that the portrayal of black holes, wormholes, and the concept of time dilation was as accurate as possible. The black hole depicted in the film, with its gravitational lensing effects, was not just a Hollywood creation—it was based on Thorne’s own calculations. The visual representation of the black hole in Interstellar is now considered one of the most realistic depictions of such an object ever created.
More recently, Thorne served as a scientific advisor on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which explores the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. While the film is more historical than Interstellar, Thorne’s role was critical in ensuring the science behind nuclear physics was portrayed correctly, adding authenticity to the film’s depiction of the intense scientific debates and ethical dilemmas surrounding the Manhattan Project.
Kip Thorne’s ability to blend complex theoretical physics with mainstream media is nothing short of remarkable. His influence not only shapes the scientific community but also inspires the general public to engage with and appreciate the mysteries of the universe. His contributions to films like Interstellar and Oppenheimer highlight his incredible ability to bring the most advanced scientific concepts to life in ways that captivate and educate audiences worldwide.
The event started with a raffle of 43 copies of Kip Thorne’s books, which he signed for students. I was incredibly lucky to win one of these, and to my surprise, this was actually my second time meeting him (I ran into him once walking around campus in my first year when he stopped to talk to students)! It feels surreal to casually mention meeting a scientist of such stature, but one of the coolest parts of being at Caltech the accessibility of incredible minds like Kip. With our small, tight-knit student body, moments like this happen more often than you might think.
After the raffle, I lined up to meet Kip and get my book signed. It was an honor to talk with him again, especially knowing how influential he’s been in both the scientific and cinematic worlds. This time, I asked him to sign the book for both my grandpa and me, which made the experience even more meaningful. Later that evening, we gathered on the lawn behind Red Door for an outdoor screening of Oppenheimer. Kip shared some insights about his involvement in the film and the historical accuracy of the science portrayed, adding a fascinating layer to the viewing experience.
