What’s Playing on Campus? A Sonic Portrait of Caltech Students

,

As a very serious and not-at-all-procrastinatory endeavor, we wandered around campus asking people the question: What are you listening to right now?

(We also took note of some very arbitrary facts from each person sampled).

While we did not start this adventure with any real purpose in mind, we ended up coming up with a (albeit very biased towards the people we knew) compilation of the auditory undercurrents of Caltech — the campus vibe distilled into musical form. From our investigation, we obtained a large collection of data, but no real ideas for what to do with it. So, we decided to give our notes to ChatGPT and asked it to sort the Caltech people into groups. So without further ado, here’s what our classmates are listening to, and what ChatGPT had to say about it:

1. Indie / Alt / Folk Lovers

Introspective, poetic, often plant people. Emotional depth, a little melancholic or naturey.

  • Hi! I'm Emma, a current senior from Torrance, CA (one of the beach city LA suburbs)! I'm a double major in geobiology and biology interested in the weird microbes that live in extreme environments and whether life could exist on other planets. In my free time, I like to do anything that involves going outside and getting off campus -- skiing, ice skating, surfing, hiking, camping, or even just getting coffee! I also like to do art, read, and play my guitar.
